Farm Financing

We have a number of funding resources you may find helpful. Our Financing a Farm Operation fact sheet outlines a few pathways available to farmers.

It is generally recommended that farmers begin by using personal cash funds, rather than relying heavily on loans.

However there are some public and private loan options, specifically for farmers. Keep in mind that all of these opportunities will require a well structured business plan. In addition to loans, there are several several grant programs available to farmers from federal or state sources, each with specific objectives. Our Grant Opportunities for Farmers fact sheet provides information on these programs.

However these grants are highly competitive and are not a reliable strategy for starting a business.

In addition, there are various other organizations you may want to connect with, including Farm Credit East. Some opportunities are available for land improvement, such as the New Farmers Grant Fund, and NYS Ag & Markets has a list of other programs that could help.

Also, if you are not already subscribed to our emails, we regularly feature funding opportunities in our newsletter. This always features the most up-to-date information we have for funding opportunities.

If you haven't already, we also suggest you connect with your local extension office, as they may be able to offer directed support and local opportunities. If you are not located in New York, use this USDA Land-Grant Directory to find your local extension network and offices.
